Milestones in Project Management

The longer the timeline on a project is or the more moving parts a project has, the easier it can be to miss the forest for the trees. Milestones are one tool project managers use to break larger projects into smaller phases.

A milestone can represent any work item or event you want it to. You could make a milestone a first deliverable, a client meeting, or a deadline you’re hoping to have certain tasks completed by in order to stay on schedule.

Creating Milestones in Indy

There are two primary ways to create a milestone in Indy.

1) The first option is to go to the page for the Tasks tool. If you click on the "Add" button on that page, you'll now have the option to create a milestone in addition to standard tasks.

2) For the second option, you’ll need to go to the project you’d like to create a milestone for. There, under the Milestone tab, you should see the option to create one.

Next, you’ll fill in all the information for it just like you would for a task! Remember to save when you’re done.

Editing, Deleting, and Changing Milestones

If you need to make a change to a milestone, it’s simple. Everything can be done from the “Milestone details” pop-up. To access the milestone’s details, all you have to do is click on the milestone in your project or calendar. When you do, this modal should pop-up:

From here, you can change any of the details associated with a milestone such as name, description, project, due date or tags.

Deleting milestones is easy, too. There are two places where milestones can be deleted:

  1. Click on the three-dot menu on the milestone from the project view and select the option to delete.

2. Open up that “Milestone details” modal we saw earlier. At the bottom, you’ll find another three-dot menu with the option to delete available after you click.

One more thing–any task can become a milestone and any milestone can be turned back into a task, giving you maximum flexibility over your work items.

How to Find Your Milestones

You can find your milestones in a couple different ways:

  1. On the page of the project the milestone is associated with.

  2. Indy milestones also automatically sync to your calendar, allowing you to see them along with the rest of your schedule.

The Next Milestone for Milestones

As was stated earlier in this article, a big benefit of using milestones is the ability to break down longer-term projects into distinct sections. Similarly, this release is just the beginning for milestones and other project management options in Indy.

This first version of milestones will serve as a building block for future releases, such as a project timeline. Be sure to keep an eye out for updates or share feedback so we know how you’d like to see this feature evolve in the future.
